3 Steps To Take This Winter To Make Your Basement Waterproof

by Jill Jenkins

The last thing you want to get into your basement is water. Here are three steps you can take this winter to help keep your basement waterproof.

#1 Check Your Downspouts

The first thing you need to do is check your downspouts. The key to keeping your basement waterproof is keeping water away from your basement in the first place. Your downspouts should be directed away from your house so that all water that flows out of them flows away from your house and into the local storm drains.

One day when it is raining, go outside and make sure that the water is flowing down and away from your house. You may want to add new downspouts to direct the water away from your home.

Doing this will help keep water away from your basement to begin with.

#2 Seal Your Foundation

Second, walk around the outside of your house and make sure that you can't see any cracks in the foundation of your home. If you see any cracks, you need to fill them in. You can purchase special sealants that you can inject into the cracks to effectively seal off these foundation cracks and ensure that water doesn't make its way through these cracks and into your basement. You can also apply concrete waterproof coating to the outside of your foundation to ensure that water doesn't make its way into your basement.

#3 Seal The Walls Of Your Basement

Finally, you can help ensure that your basement stays dry this winter by sealing the walls of your basement. Apply the same concrete waterproof coating to the inside of your basement that you applied to the outside of your basement. You are going to want to apply a few coats of this material. Make sure that it seeps into and fills any cracks that you can see in the cement in your basement. This will help prevent water from making its way through your concrete foundation into your house.

Then, apply a few coats of waterproof paint. Doing this should seal off any cracks that are inside of your basement and prevent any water from making its way inside of your living space. Waterproof paint will also help prevent mold from ever taking hold and growing on your basement walls.

Do the three steps above this winter to ensure that your basement stays and is completely waterproof. For professional help with waterproofing your basement, contact a company like Sohan and Sons.
