Keep Your Auto Glass In Good Shape With These Maintenance Tips

by Jill Jenkins

The glass in your car may not be something you think about often, but it is important that you keep your auto glass in good shape so it can protect you from the elements. Here are some tips to make sure that your glass continues to stay intact and do its job:

Don't Pour Boiling Water on Your Windows

For many people, de-icing windows in the winter is a time-consuming job, especially if you're in a hurry. It may seem like a smart idea to boil some water and pour it onto your windows so that you can get rid of the ice, but in fact that can be damaging to your car windows. Extreme and rapid temperature changes can cause the glass to crack.

To get ice off of your windows, use an ice scraper that is specifically made for cars. If you do not, you may find that you scratch your windows by accident.

Not Driving Your Car? Leave Windows Open

If you haven't been driving your car for a while and have stored it in your garage, if you're not careful you may be greeted with the sight of mold on your windows. Mold gets onto your windows, typically on the inside, because it enters through your car's vents. Just as mold might grow anyway that is moist and dark, if your car is not getting much use and is exposed to moisture, you might have to deal with this problem.

To avoid mold on your windows, make sure you leave your windows open somewhat to allow for any moisture to dry out. You may also consider leaving your car out in sunlight periodically to avoid moisture or condensation.

Take Steps to Avoid Vandalism

Of course, there is no guarantee that you can stop someone from vandalizing your car and breaking your auto glass. However, there are some steps you can take so that vandalism is less of a possibility. For example, if you have a garage, store your car inside of it. If you park your car overnight, make sure to remove anything that seems valuable or desirable; don't leave your wallet in the car. If you are traveling to a place that you don't know very well, think about finding alternate transportation so you don't have to leave your car out on the street.

Now that you know what you can do to keep your auto glass in good shape, you can do what it takes to help protect the glass in your car. You may also want to keep an auto glass repair contractor's number on hand, so if you do have a problem, you can get it taken care of right away.
